DonorDrive Acquired By Bonterra

The nonprofit tech buying spree continues. Social good software company Bonterra has acquired DonorDrive, a provider of peer-to-peer and digital fundraising solutions. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquisition is part of Bonterra’s drive to build, acquire, and integrate technology. Bonterra’s leadership’s plan is to double the size of philanthropy during the next decade by enabling trust-based relationships between funders, volunteers and the nonprofits they support.

The integration of DonorDrive with Bonterra’s suite of fundraising tools will enable users to have one unified experience across all their fundraising platforms: email fundraising, online fundraising, event fundraising, social media fundraising, peer-to-peer fundraising, development, volunteer management, direct mail and online advocacy. The acquisition bolsters the quantity and quality of data that feeds Bonterra’s current and growing list of AI-enabled fundraising capabilities, according to an announcement from the firm.

“Supporters want to give more — and nonprofits need more sustainable giving,” Scott Brighton, Bonterra chief executive officer, said via a statement. “The key to both is crafting experiences that create meaningful connections between givers and the causes they care about, and DonorDrive is a market leader in doing exactly that. This acquisition is a major win for nonprofits, supporters, and Bonterra’s mission to increase giving to 3% of US GDP by 2033,” the statement continued.

“The DonorDrive team has built an amazing solution to help hundreds of nonprofit organizations increase revenue for individual giving and peer-to-peer fundraising, Kevin O’Brien, chief executive officer of InvoiceCloud, the parent company of DonorDrive, said via a statement. “We are confident that the addition of DonorDrive to the Bonterra portfolio supports a shared vision for nonprofits to create lasting impact through enhanced supporter experiences,” the statement continued.

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP was legal advisor to Bonterra. Raymond James was financial advisor to InvoiceCloud, and Vinson & Elkins LLP was legal advisor.

The acquisition market has been active. In August, social impact platform provider Submittable acquired grants platform WizeHive, which had scooped up platforms Bright Funds and WeHero. The deal brought together four social impact brands for grants management and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

In July, the Association & Events (A&E) and Nonprofit Solutions divisions of Community Brands were acquired by TA Associates (TA), a global growth private equity firm, creating a new platform called Momentive Software. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but multiple industry experts estimated that the deal exceeded $1 billion.

Also in July, several assets of fundraising firm The Lukens Company were acquired by the agency Phoenix Innovate. The combined entity is intended to leverage technology to enhance efficiencies, expand advanced data insights and broaden hyper-personalization capabilities. RKD Group acquired both Heller Consulting and MDM Fundraising.

In February, a new corporate umbrella named Kindsight was established under which iWave, UC Innovation which owns fundraising platform Ascend Fundraising Solutions, and NonprofitOS now reside. iWave CEO Craig O’Neill is head of the new company. All three firms are funded by private equity investor Incline Equity Partners, which also owns fundraising agency RKD Group. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.
